Private Alfred Amburgey
Co A, 13th Kentucky Cavalry Regiment (CSA)
1813 - 1927


Alfred H. Amburgey was born in Wilkes County, North Carolina in 1813. His family moved to Castlewood, Russell County, Virginia in 1814, and to Hazard, Perry County, Kentucky in 1827. In 1833 he married Mary Hagins and together they had nine children. In 1842 he was farming in Whitesburg in Letcher County.

He followed his son, Thomas, and enlisted in Co A of the 13th Kentucky Cavalry on Arpil 14, 1863 at Whitesburg. Just three months later he was captured at the Battle of Gladeville in Virginia. He spent the next two years in three prisoner of war camps in the North.

After the war he returned to Whitesburg as a farmer.
