Private John Walker Amburgey
Co F, 5th Kentucky Mounted Infantry, CSA
1837 -- 1893


Private John Walker Amburgey was born in Perry County, the son of Umphrey Amburgey and Fannie Johnson in 1837. He farmed at home until enlisting in the Confederacy in Caudill's Co F, 5th Kentucky Mounted Infantry at Pound Gap, Virginia on November 1, 1861. He was listed as a deserter on February 8, 1862, but enlisted again on November 1, 1862 in Whitesburg and was discharged on April 14, 1863. He was captured on August 19, 1863 and confined at Rock Island Barracks in Illinois until his enlistment in the Union Army on October 6, 1864.

He returned to Letcher County after the war to farm. On January 1, 1866 he married Sarah Huff of Virginia and they had eight children.
