History:  The story begins in 16th Century Bonningheim, Germany, located in the State of Wurttemberg, slightly northeast of Stuttgart. Our link to the Amburgey family is my Great Grandmother, Ailey Amburgey. The oldest Amburger is Simon Amburger, born before 1560. In 1717, his descendant, Hans Conrad Amburger, at age 34, immigrated to the Virginia Colony and settled in Orange County with his wife and stepdaughter. He was a vine-dresser in Germany, but an indentured servant to Governor Spottswood in the colonies. He was a member of the Germanna Colony. At the end of his indenture, he returned to the land and was a vine-dresser, cooper, and tobacco planter. The records of Augusta, Orange, Spottsylvania, and Culpeper counties contain court records concerning the land transactions of the family along the Rappahannock River. (It is interesting to note that Augusta County, Va/ was home to the families several of our lines: Armstrong, Patrick, Lyons, etc.)

In 1778 John Amburgey sold a horse to serve the Revolutionary cause. In 1780, he joined Colonel Benjamin Cleveland's regiment and was with him at he Battle of Kings Mountain and five or six other campaigns.

After the war he married Elizabeth Hamon, daughter of Captain Ambrose Hamon in the Roaring River area of Wilkes County, NC, and began raising their family there. Their first child, William Amburgey, was drafted into Captain Ambrose Carlton's Company to serve in the War of 1812. He enlisted in 1814 and served until 9 March 1815.1

In 1814 John and Elizabeth moved to Russell County, VA with the family. While there, their son John married Aily Grizzle about 1818. Another son, Ambrose came across the Clinch River into Knott County, KY and acquired land. He went back and gathered up the family and came through Pound Gap to settle on holdings of 10,000 acres along Carr Creek.

The family continued to prosper and farm peaceably. John and Ailey had Ambrose; he married Elizabeth Johnson. They raised a large family and continued to farm the land until the outbreak of the War Between the States. After the war, Ambrose moved first to Wolfe County and then to Illinois. His son, our Great Uncle John Amburgey, enlisted in Ben Caudill's Army: Co. B, 13th Ky Cav CSA, and was taken prisoner at Gladesville . My Great Grandmother, Ailey Amburgey, married a fellow trooper of the 13th: Pvt. Russell Cornett (son of John Cornett and Rachael Kelly). From that union, my Grandmother, Sarah Elizabeth Cornett was born on October 7, 1876
