Umphrey Wilburn Amburgy was born in Perry County in 1833, the son of Ambrose Amburgey and Rebecca Francis. He married Elizabeth Cornett in 1852 and they had one daughter. He joined Caudill's 13th Cavalry at Whitesburg on September 29, 1862. He was shot and killed by Union soldiers while standing in the doorway of his own house while wearing his Confederate uniform.
