1st Corporal William W. Amburgey
5th Kentucky Infantry

William W. "Sal Bill" Amburgey was born in Castlewood, Russell County, Virginia in in 1826. He was the son of Robert Amburgey and Elizabeth Fuller. His family moved to Hazard, Perry County, Kentucky in 1827. He was in Whitesburg, Letcher County, in 1842. In 1847 he married Levina Sparkman of Whitesburg. They had six children.

He enlisted in the 5th Kentucky Mounted Rifles (CSA) on November 1 , 1861. He was wounded in the back and remained bedfast for 20 years. He was a farmer in Hindman, Knott County, in 1884.
