Joseph Crawford was born in Virginia the son of Colonel Valentine Crawford. He appeared before the Estill County Court on July 16th, 1922 at the age of 80. He declared that he had served in the Revolutionary War and had enlisted in 1776 in Captain Burk's Company in Pennsylvania, and was attached to the 4th Regiment of Artillery of the Pennsylvania Line (Captain Duffers Company). He was in the battles of Brandywine and Jamestown. He was discharged in Philadelphia.
