Name: Probably a trade/occupation name for a blacksmith
History: The story begins with Isaac Smith , and Frankie Sprowls (or perhaps "Childers"), in Virginia. They had several children. Isaac died and Frankie remarried John Kelly. One child, Nancy Branham Smith married Jesse H. Cornett b abt 1795. At least two other children, Rachel and her sister, were using the name Kelly at the time of their marriages. The marriage ban of John Cornett and Rachel Kelly is in the Clay County, KY records.
After the death of John Cornett, Rachel is listed in the 1860 census as the head of the household under the name of Rachel Cornett at age 60. Also in her household is a John Kelly age 80, probably a son or nephew of John Kelly (as her stepfather, John Kelly, was 76 when he filed for his Revolutionary War pension in 1822.)
My great aunt was named after Rachel (Rachel Cornett), and my great uncle after John Kelly (Benjamin 'John Kelly' Cornett.)
In J. D. Cornett's book "Genealogy of William Cornett ", he lists Rachel as a "Smith". In the genealogical works of James Bowman, recorded in the Owsley County library, he lists Rachel as a Kelly with her father as "John Kelly".
The Letcher County Historical Family book says that Rachel was the step daughter of John Kelly. Her brother was William Branham Smith, son of Isaac and Frankie Branham Smith. William was born in 1792 and died in 1870. His sons were in the 13th Ky. Cav. One son, Andrew, died at Camp Douglas.
