WEBB FAMILY

Coat of Arms

Our story begins with Robert Webb of Tetbury, Gloucestershire, England. His son, John, came with his family to Pennsylvania in the company of William Penn on the ship Cantebury. They departed England on September 7, 1699.

John married Mary Boone. She was the daughter of George Boone, and aunt to the famous Daniel Boone. The Boones and the Webbs both came to Exeter, Berks County, Pennsylvania and lived in a Quaker community. Evidently, John and Mary did not exactly follow the required courting requirements and the Boone family came under some criticism. However, records show that they couple in fact met the Quaker standards for the engagement and marriage.

The Boones and the Webbs eventually fell out with the Quakers and moved to Yadkin River Valley of North Carolina. John and Mary had several children as shown below. One, James Webb, a great grandfather, served in the Revolutionary War as an aide to General George Washington at the Battle of White Plains. He was wounded when shot through the body in this battle. He recovered and returned home. James Webb married Elizabeth "Lizzie" Nelson and they moved to Letcher County via Pound Gap.

John and Mary's other children and some kin immigrated into Kentucky after the war. His son Benjamin settled in what is now Letcher County in 1799. Benjamin and a Cornett had made expeditions into the Kentucky wilderness in the 1780s. In 1808, John moved with Susan Hannah Webb to join Benjamin.

Other Webbs who migrated to Kentucky from North Carolina included -- James and Elizabeth Pennington Webb to the Little Sandy near Webbville in Lawrence County, Molly Webb and Stephen Adams and to Magoffin County, and Sally Webb & Matthew Caudill to Millstone, Letcher County

Two recently famous Webb cousins include the Country Music stars Loretta Lynn and Crystal Gale, sisters, who were born in Kentucky and are descendants of John Webb and Mary Boone.

I came across some note by someone that the DNA testing had failed to establish a link to John Webb and Mary Boone for the Webb family of Southeastern Kentucky, but many genealogist maintain this relationship
